Anyone else notice that the “context” provided by @CommunityNotes on tweets about taxes seems to have a pretty clear pro-billionaire, pro-Republican bias?
Let’s break it down 🧵 https://t.co/o9nUfTYdqA
This one is perhaps the most shocking.
That $163 billion referenced by @RBReich is money the richest 1% owe in taxes but fail to pay every year.
Wealthy people make up a large part of the tax gap—so no, the wealthy do not “overwhelmingly follow the laws.” https://t.co/GM74VgC9jq
This one below President Biden’s tweet was seen by millions of people.
The fact is billionaires derive a huge part of their income from unrealized capital gains, so it’s fair to include those gains when calculating their true tax rate. https://t.co/TbLdi6S6n1
The note then is simply arguing that billionaires are not paying taxes on all their income. https://t.co/BW8BaSvaPC
This note links to the GOP-written bill for a national sales tax.
The note implies that a national sales tax of ~30% would adequately replace the current income tax.
But some experts say the tax would have to be closer to 60% to make up for eliminating all other federal tax. https://t.co/HBCdYFlNgh
And regardless of whether the bill eliminates income taxes or not, the plan DOES levy a 30% national sales tax on the American people. An item with a base cost of $1 would cost $1.30 with this tax.
The only purpose of this note is to counter argue in favor of the proposal. https://t.co/Wklm2jJTMe
