Inspired by @amandalhu, @Amal4Solutions, and @RealSexyCyborg, I made my first batch of the powerful disinfectant hypochlorous acid today. Since I'm not an obsessive cleaner, I chose a USB device that makes only 300 ml (about 1-1/3 cup) at a time. Here's what worked for me. https://t.co/4sFoFaf68d
I used:
300 ml of distilled water from my dehumidifier
1/8 tsp of plain (uniodized salt)
I measured the pH and it was about 7 (as expected for neutral, distilled water). I needed to bring the pH down to 5 or 6, so I added 1/4 tsp white vinegar.
Then the pH measured about 6, so I poured the concoction into the device and turned it on. Almost immediately, bubbles started forming and soon filled the bottle. The device ran for 8 minutes and shut itself off.
Time to recheck the pH and measure the free chlorine. pH looked like 5 or 6 -- just what I wanted for a result that was mostly hypochlorous acid with very little bleach. https://t.co/Ep5whHYVC5
Now to check concentration of free chlorine. I was aiming for a low concentration of 100 - 200 ppm. My chlorine test strips max out at 200, and that's the reading I got. Next time I'll use only half as much salt. However, I have just made an effective disinfectant! https://t.co/zZ7GQHXA0g
