1. Short #monkeypox 🧡
@WHO issued a lengthy update just now that includes case definitions for suspected, probable and confirmed cases. To date 12 countries have reported 92 confirmed cases and 28 suspected cases. https://t.co/CXGiXb9KiV https://t.co/2HEluWgBjL

2. @WHO says the cases are mainly but not exclusively in men who have sex with men. To date all the genetic sequences generated have indicated virus from the West African clade of #monkeypox, the milder clade. https://t.co/C9LBIJpi3z

3. The West African clade of #monkeypox is milder than the Congo Basin clade, but according to the scientific literature has a case fatality ratio of ~ 3.6%. As this virus continues to spread we'll see if that CFR is accurate. https://t.co/cppPfARIns

4. It's not clear where this outbreak started or when. The genetic sequences seem closely tied to earlier viruses from Nigeria.
I'm interested in the @WHO's case definition for suspected cases, particularly the date. Why specify March 15?

5. @WHO says there are 92 confirmed & 28 suspected cases of #monkeypox. But this outbreak is moving fast & numbers can be out of date by the time they're issued. The line list a number of researchers are maintaining is already up to 186 confirmed+suspect. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1CEBhao3rMe-qtCbAgJTn5ZKQMRFWeAeaiXFpBY3gbHE/edit#gid=0
