Dee Noonan Draws

I’ve been trying to organize my thoughts and decide on what it is I should say or do. I am grateful for the encouragement and support of everyone who is sharing my plea. I am overwhelmed and intimidated. The internet is known for chewing people up and it is scary having... 🧵1/

so many eyes on me. But I no longer want to shout into obscurity, into nothingness.
Voter suppression is real. It is happening in my state and across the country. So many voices are being drowned out by over policing, misogyny and systemic racism. 2/

And for many, they have been convinced that their vote doesn't count. I want to believe in our systems - that if we unite we can win. But how do you win against a system that has been designed specifically to work against you? 3/

Our founding fathers fought against a ruler of power and money. They fought against taxation without representation. And here we are, centuries later still facing the same fight but not from across the sea- from the few that hold power over the many, here in our own country. 4/

We need unity. We need to be strong and we need a revolution. We need true representation of and for the people. These politicians forget that they are supposed to be serving us.

I have had some people asking me to run for office but I am not a politician. 5/

I have a public education from a very under-funded and misrepresented school district. Systemic racism and the elite wealthy have made sure that people like me don’t have the means to create change. In that system we have to rely on the more privileged. 6/

I wish I had an answer to this oppression. I wish I had the tools to enact change, to embolden my community and my people. But I am just one person, a queer bi-racial woman in the deep south surrounded by walls and men with guns. 7/

All I have is my conscience and my heart to guide me. It’s difficult to feel empowered. But I want to fight. I need to keep fighting. We all do, together.

So my ask is that, if you can, engage. Go to your local officials and demand change. Get together and vote them out. 8/

Talk to the people around you and get them involved too. Even if all you can do is donate a little money or time to the causes dedicated to changing this country into one we can actually be proud of. One of true equality, freedom and human decency. 9/9 #UvaldeStrong
