I once managed a cafe in Singapore that was owned by a group of ‘Christian friends’.

After a few months I found out that they had not paid some of my part-time staff in weeks and had not put in CPF contributions for my full-time staff for a whole year. https://t.co/wGPZZDJr1t

I was so angry that I handed in my resignation the next day.

Just because something is your side ‘passion project’ doesn’t give you the right to treat your workers like shit.

What made it worse was that they were so deluded that they believed it was their ‘calling’. Fuck that.

The privilege is real.

My assistant manager was a young mother from the Philippines and she NEEDED her pay check on time so that she could remit money home.

The lady boss would apologise and offer false platitudes and say that she’s ‘keeping her daughter in prayer’.

How the fuck does that help when a young girl is in the hospital and needs asthma medication and her mother doesn’t have money to send home because she hasn’t been paid on time??

Pay your workers a decent wage. Pay them on time. If you can’t do this, don’t own a business.

The young Filipino mum eventually moved back to the Philippines.

We kept in touch and now she runs a successful catering company, no thanks to her Singaporean employers who took advantage of her situation.

Am so glad that things worked out for her eventually.
