CA Gov. Gavin Newsom is trying to give conservatives a taste of their own medicine by taking the legal arguments behind TX’s anti-abortion bill S.B. 8 and using them to model a new bill that would allow Californians to sue gun manufacturers and assault weapons dealers. https://t.co/j57EvnEE07
On December 10, the Supreme Court issued a ruling allowing S.B. 8 to remain in place for the time being. The bill allows private citizens in Texas the right to sue anyone who 'aids or abets’ in the performance of an abortion after just six weeks of pregnancy.
The next day, Newsom tweeted that he was 'outraged’ by SCOTUS’ decision and added, 'If states can now shield their laws from review by the federal courts that compare assault weapons to Swiss Army knives, then California will use that authority to protect people's lives.’
‘I have directed my staff to work with the legislature and the Attorney General on a bill that would create a right of action allowing private citizens to seek injunctive relief...'
'...and statutory damages of at least $10,000 per violation plus costs and attorney's fees, against anyone who manufactures, distributes, or sells an assault weapon or ghost gun kit or parts in the State of California,’ the statement continued.
'If the most efficient way to keep these devastating weapons off our streets is to add the threat of private lawsuits, we should do just that,’ Newsom said.
